Exmouth Christmas Lights Competition!

Light Exmouth up this Christmas!

Ho Ho Ho … Hey kids better watch out and better not shout because word has it the jolly big man has Exmouth clearly marked on his GPS navigation map this Christmas. We’ve made a list and checked it twice to make sure all our holiday homes are visited … even if you’ve been naughty or nice!

Yep … Exmouth is starting to feel like Christmas … Time to begin decking the halls, hanging up silver bells and painting the town red!

Exmouth Lights Competition!

Oh come all ye faithful and dig out those dusty Christmas lights to string from salt trees to gum trees. The lights competition is on again!

Horizon Power has kindly sponsored $750 in prize money to the brightest house in Exmouth. Oh jingle bells!

Exmouth lights competition may not be a white Christmas, however we do offer a much friendlier town to see some sparkling lights, plus our warmer weather makes the beaches extremely inviting.

A drive around Exmouth spotting lights will have the kids singing along to “Hark the Herald Angels Sing”!

Visiting Exmouth during the Warmer Months of the Year

Each year we are seeing more and more visitors dreaming of an Exmouth Xmas. All I want for Christmas is my own holiday home!

Perfect to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and spend lazy days snorkelling the Ningaloo Reef. Hit the beach and create Frosty the Snowman from pure white Ningaloo sand.

Spread seasonal cheer and book one of our pet friendly homes for all of the family to spend the silly season in Exmouth.

We even have a range of holiday houses available for the whole twelve days of Christmas in 2017!

Some local restaurants in town offer a full lunch option offering seafood and traditions lunches … although it might be a little too hot for chestnuts roasting on an open fire!

Exmouth – 50 Years Celebrations

A Brief History

The town of Exmouth was born when the United States built the Naval Communication Station North West Cape. The station opened on 16th September 1967.

On 20th September 1968 the name changed to the Naval Communication Station Harold E Holt in memory of the late Australian Prime Minister Harold E Holt.  The Prime Minister disappeared while swimming in Portsea, Victoria three months after commissioning.  He was declared dead presumably from drowning but his body was never recovered.

Exmouth town site developed the same time to give support to the base and provide housing to the dependent families of the US Navy personnel.

US family houses were built in town rather than on the base that only had single men housing.  A power station was constructed, bores were sunk and water was reticulated around town then the became sealed and kerbed which was a first for the north west.  Later a school, hospital, community hall, library and swimming pool and other sporting facilities were quickly built.  The town was officially opened the same day as the station.

50 Years Celebrations

On 16th September 2017 the 50 years celebrations of the town and station will begin and events are being planned over three days.  The celebrations will also coincide with the official opening of the new Ningaloo Centre where many of the events will take place.

Ningaloo Centre

Exmouth will see the return of quite a large number of US Navy personnel for the celebrations.  VIP’s and Visitors from all over the globe are expected too.  So make sure you book your accommodation early to avoid disappointment.

Look at that mouth

History of the Ningaloo Whaleshark Festival

For years Exmouth has hosted a small Festival in September. Mostly catering for the locals and visiting holidaymakers. The festival was known then as Aquafest and celebrated the Community’s close relationship with the beautiful pristine waters of the Ningaloo Reef and Exmouth Gulf. Aquafest was a one day event moving from town to the new Marina Development.

In 2002, when the Marina site was no longer available, the Ningaloo Whale Shark Festival was born. A one-day event held in May each year on the town oval. By popular demand in 2006 the event was extended to three days. Events included the Whale Shark Challenge Triathlon, a new regional arts prize, portrait painting and an annual cricket match on the town oval between locals versus celebrity teams.

Since 2011 the Ningaloo Whale Shark Festival has gone from strength to strength and now attracts visitors from all over Australia and worldwide to enjoy the uniqueness Exmouth and the Whale Shark Festival have to offer.

Ningaloo Whale Shark Festival continues to increase awareness of the plight of the whale sharks and provides education to people of all ages. Interaction with whale sharks is a unique and amazing experience and the festival promotes this over the three day event. There is still a lot of mystery and so much more we need to learn about these magnificent creatures. We are very happy  they come back each year and that their numbers are increasing.

Ningaloo Whale Shark Festival brings together government departments, business, industry and community members. The Festival provides three days of education, entertainment and activities for all to enjoy. Sponsors play a huge part in the success of the festival we would like to thank the following local sponsors for their continued support and a big thank you to all.
