Best swims with Humpback whales on the Ningaloo Reef

Swim with Humpback Whales at Ningaloo Reef where you will be within 30m of the whales.  Interaction has to happen on their terms so staying around 30m encourages these curious animals to come closer for a peek at YOU. Imagine gently floating with only a mask and snorkel needed as equipment waiting for them to come in closer.  The tour photographer will be doing their best to capture you in a photo with a whale underneath or nearby you what a wondrous keepsake to have of your experience.

Swim with Humpback Whales

Swimming with a large wild animal like a humpback depends on the mood of the whales so tours cannot predict the outcome of being up close to the whales. If you are lucky the whales will choose to swim with you. Humpback whales are very inquisitive and will wonder what the small blobs (your group) are floating on the surface.

Swimming with a whale is far from guaranteed  its very much a decision they make, rather than what the tour operators do that makes this possible.  Please do not book unless you are prepared to be disappointed rather just enjoy the opportunity and the rest of the fun the tour provides.

Migration Patterns of Humpback Whales on the Ningaloo Reef

From August through to October the Ningaloo Reef  is visited by the biggest migrating humpback whale population in the world (estimated at 40,000 humpbacks and growing!)

They usually feed only during summer months on krill and small fish, then live off their fat reserves when birthing and raising their calves.

The humpback whale has a very distinctive body shape, with a massive tail, a broader knobbly head, and long pectoral fins.  Adults can grow to 15-16m in length, with the females growing to be larger than their male counterparts, and weighing up to 36,000 kg!

Massive is an understatement when encountering an adult humpback whale up close.
